Post Student visa: Full Time Work Visa (H1B)

Non-EU citizens who desire to work in Malta must apply for a job license. The employer must apply for the licence. To begin your job search, you must first register as a job seeker (ETC 35). Employment licenses are typically valid for one year from the date of issuance and can be extended through a renewal application. The application must be submitted 8 weeks before the current employment license expires. When the current license expires, the employee is no longer permitted to work until it is renewed.

Permanent Residency options

You can apply for one of two categories of residence depending on where you are immigrating from: Ordinary Residence or Permanent Residence. The difference between the two comes down to how much you pay in taxes.

• Ordinary Residence is applicable to those who come to Malta from the EU. The tax you pay is calculated by deducting 0-35 percent of your income, minus a tax credit, based on your income and marital status.

• Permanent residency is available to anybody, regardless of nation of origin. Ordinary resident licenses must be renewed every five years, whereas permanent residency permits are renewed annually.

The Malta Global Residency Programme

This grants third-country nationals (excluding EEA and Swiss nationals) special tax treatment in Malta. To be eligible for this programme, you must meet specific requirements, such as purchasing or renting a property in Malta or Gozo and paying a minimum yearly tax due on foreign income earned in Malta. Malta Residence Programme

The Malta Residence Programme Rules (the "Laws") establish a Malta Special Tax Status for all EU/EEA/Swiss residents. All oversea income is taxed at 15%, with the option of receiving double tax relief on such income subject to a minimum tax of €15,000 per year. Any additional chargeable income received by the recipient will be taxed at a rate of 35%.
